Leukocytes are high: it's causes and Symptoms
In each mikroliter the blood of adults, normally there are 3,500-10,500 white blood cells or leukocytes. However, if the number of leukocytes is too high, it's a sign we are suffering a particular disease.
Leukocytes or white blood cells derived from bone marrow and circulate throughout the bloodstream. They are an important part of our immune system. Part of the blood that this one was able to produce antibodies to fight off foreign organisms (viruses, bacteria, and parasites) as a defense against infection, allergy, as well as responding to support immune function.
Newborns have leukocytes between 9,000-30,000 per mikroliter blood. The number of normal leukocytes range this will change as we get older, to just be a 3,500-10,500 per mikroliter as we mature. In adults, the number of white blood cells or leukocytes are high if more than 11,000 per mikroliter. There are several things that can cause a rise in the number of leukocytes.
Causes of high leukocytes
White blood cells or leukocytes are composed of five components, i.e., neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. Normally, leukocytes consists of 40%-60% neutrophils, 20%-40% lymphocytes, 2%-8% monocytes, 1%-4% eosinophils, and 0.5%-1% basophils. Here are some of the causes of the rising number of one of the components of leukocytes over the normal threshold.
If a high neutrophil count :
- · Infection with bacteria, viruses, or fungus acute.
- · Physical injuries, post-operative recovery or healing of wounds.
- · Inflammation of the thyroid.
- · Rheumatoid arthritis, fever rheumatik.
- · Chronic mielositik leukemia.
- · Uric acid.
- · Eklampsia, seizures or coma in pregnant women.
- · Acute stress.
If the number of lymphocytes is high:
- · Viral infections, such as measles or mumps.
- · Bacterial infections, such as whooping cough (pertussis) and tuberculosis.
- · Cancer of the blood, such as multiple myeloma and leukemia Lymphocytic.
- · Lymphoma.
- · Glandular fever (Mononucleosis).
- · Hepatitis due to virus infection or bacteria.
If the number of monocytes are high:
- · Viral infections, such as measles, gondongan, and Mononucleosis.
- · Chronic bacterial infection.
- · Tuberculosis.
- · Parasitic infections.
- · Leukemia.
- · Chronic inflammation, such as lupus, vaskulitis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
If the number of eosinophils is high:
- · Parasitic infections.
- · Hipereosinofilia syndrome.
- · Connective tissue disease.
- · Cancer, such as leukemia myelogenik chronic.
- · Allergic reactions, such as eczema or asthma exists.
- · Addison's Disease.
If the number of basophils high:
- · Allergic reactions.
- · Chicken pox.
- · Mieloproliferatif disease, that disease of the bone marrow.
- · Chronic inflammation, such as rheumatoid arthritis and ulcerative colitis.
- · Chronic myelogenik leukemia. Recovery of splenektomi, namely surgical procedure to remove the spleen.
In addition to the above, high leukocytes can also be caused by smoking, certain medications such as corticosteroids and epinefrin, and myelofibrosis, i.e., abnormalities in the bone marrow which interferes with the production of blood cells normal.
So basically, the number of white blood cells or leukocytes are high demonstrates the existence of :
· Increased production of white blood cells to fight infection.
· Disorders of the immune system that makes the production of white blood cells increases.
· A reaction to a drug that increases the production of white blood cells.
· Bone marrow disease that cause white blood cell production rises abnormally.
Symptoms high leukocytes or lekositosis
Leukocytes are high, or also called leukositosis not always symptomatic
However the common symptoms that can be identified as:
- · Fever.
- · Bleeding or bruising.
- · The body feels weak, tired, or sick.
- · Feeling light-headed, fainting, or sweating.
- · Arm, leg, or stomach pain or tingling.
- · It's hard to breathe, concentrate, or the view is compromised.
- · Weight down without cause.
- · No appetite.
If you experience the above symptoms, immediately consult a doctor. Causes of high leukocytes need to get checks and appropriate treatment. After doctors perform a physical exam and a blood test, treatment will be given based on the underlying causes of occurrence of leukocytes.
